Former President John Mahama has showered Robert Mugabe with praises following the  93 year old's resignation as President of Zimbabwe.

Mr John Mahama, on his facebook wall, described the man,  who once worked in Ghana,   as a liberation hero, a patriot and a great Pan Africanist, stating that history will “remember him kindly”.

Robert Mugabe  resigned on Tuesday, bringing an end to 37 years of rule amid popular and political pressure, an ending labelled by the former Ghana president as "sad."

"A sad ending for a liberation hero, a patriot and a great Pan Africanist,"John Mahama said.

"I pray the dramatic events of November serve as a reboot for democracy and prosperity in #Zim. History will remember Comrade Mugabe kindly."

The countries  parliament had launched proceedings to impeach the man, who has ruled Zimbabwe since 1980, but A letter from him read out by the speaker of parliament said the decision was voluntary and he had made it to allow a smooth transfer of power.

Mr Mugabe, 93, was until his resignation the world's oldest leader. He had previously refused to quit despite last week's military takeover and days of protests.

He  came to prominence in 1974 as one of the leaders of a guerrilla war against white-minority rule and  was seen as a hero who brought independence to the then Rhodesia.
