NEW DELHI: Instant messaging app WhatsApp has acknowledged the "bug" due to which several users are complaining that WhatsApp is deleting their old messages silently. "We are aware of this bug and are working on a fix for the users who have encountered this issue," a WhatsApp spokesperson said in a statement. The issue came to light when multiple WhatsApp users complained about the issue on Twitter, after WABeta info, the website that keeps a track on the upcoming WhatsApp features shared a screenshot of a WhatsApp user complaining about the issue.

Some users are linking this with the Google Drive backup support being removed for old WhatsApp chats if they have not been backed up manually in the last one year. For those unaware, WhatsApp had announced in August, that it will now automatically delete users’ data if the same hasn't been backed up on Google Drive manually in the last one year. This means that if you are using WhatsApp on one particular smartphone for some time and if you haven't backed up data for over a year, then all data that hasn't been backed up on Google Drive will get automatically deleted.
Also, those who had already signed in with Google Drive account on WhatsApp to backup files and had not updated the backup for over year an year then WhatsApp has delete the last Google Drive backup file. The deadline to manually backup on Google Drive was November 12.
Along with that, WhatsApp had also announced that the backups will no longer count towards the Google Drive storage quota starting November 12. This means that Google now offers free storage for WhatsApp backup files on Google Drive.
