It is a clear case of what could have been had former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson not threatened Danny Welbeck about his Manchester United career if he decided to switch nationality to Ghana.

Ace Sports journalist, Dan Kwaku Yeboah says that legendary Sir Alex Ferguson scuppered any potential switch of allegiance by Danny Welbeck to play for his motherland Ghana.

He says that former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan who played with Danny Welbeck at Sunderland in the 2010/11 season on loan managed to convince Welbeck about playing for Ghana only for Sir Alex to get wind of it.

When the Scotsman heard of it he warned Welbeck that he should play for England if he wants a career as a Manchester United player.

"Look, Asamoah Gyan singlehandedly was able to convince Danny Welbeck to come and play for Ghana. Danny Welbeck agreed to play for Ghana,” Kwaku Yeboah said.

"Asamoah said a day before the boy decided officially, Sir Alex Fergusson heard about it and threatened him not to play for Ghana because that would be the end of his Manchester United career.”

Danny Welbeck was born in England to Ghanaian parents and rose through the ranks to play for Manchester United under Sir Alex in 2008.

The striker has gone on to play for the three lions and before that played for the various England youth teams.

He left Manchester United for Arsenal and now plays for Brighton and Holve Albion and has been capped 42 times by England.
