Legendary former Black Stars captain Abedi Ayew Pele has revealed that he never fought for the captaincy of the team prior to the African Cup of Nations tournament in Senegal in 1992.

At the time news went viral that Abedi Ayew Pele had said he will not go to the tournament If he was not handed the arm band.

Kwasi Appiah was captain of the side throughout the qualifiers stage but on the eve of the tournament Kwasi Appiah was stripped off the captaincy under controversial circumstances for Abedi raising eyebrows at the time.

After this incident, Abedi Pele was accused of scheming to get the captains arm band creating disharmony and friction within the squad.

The maestro says he admits responsibility for on how for so long he has allowed falsehood to spread without talking but denies any complicity over how he got the armband.

"So many people were talking about and I take responsibility for all the news that was spreading that I fought for the captaincy,” he told GTV Sports Plus.

In a rare interview by Abedi Pele on GTV Sports Plus on Sunday he was joined by veteran Sports journalist Karl Tuffour who disclosed that the decision to strip off Kwasi Appiah's captaincy was solely then coach Bukhard Ziese's decision as he told pressmen at the time.

"I think it wasn’t true and I’m glad one of the pressmen has come out to reveal what actually happened and I will leave it like that. But I never fought for the captaincy.

Abedi Pele led Ghana to the finals of the tournament but was unable to play in the for accumulated cards as the Black Stars lost 11-10 on penalties after 0-0 in the regulation time.
