Dutch-born Ghanaian defender Jeremie Frimpong added his voice to the ongoing debate about racism in football by revealing that he was racially abused in Italy at the age of 10.

According to the 18-year old Celtic defender, football fans in Italy directed monkey chants at him when he went there for a youth torment with his then club Manchester City.

"When I was back at City, I went to a tournament in Italy and their fans were making monkey chants but I tried not to let it bother me, I still played on", Frimpong recalled.

“This must have been Under-11s. It wasn’t just me, my team-mates were getting it as well.

“It was just at the end of the game, it is a game of football, what has the colour of my skin got to do with it? I am just kicking the ball, what makes you so angry?”, he added.

Frimpong was born in Europe to a Dutch and Ghanaian parent.

The talented defender joined Celtic last summer from English Premier league outfit Manchester City where he impressed in the Youth set up.
