The Inspector General of Police (IGP) David Asante Apeatu has ordered the “immediate” interdiction of the policemen who assaulted three Ghanaian Times journalists.

The three journalists were assaulted following a traffic offence and an accident involving a police officer, using an unregistered motorcycle and the official Ghanaian Times vehicle, which was transporting the journalists to their various assignment venues.

Not happy that the journalists had tried to record the accident and the ensuing exchanges between their driver and the police motor rider, some ten officers reportedly pounced on the journalists and physically assaulted them.

In a statement issued Wednesday and signed by ACP David Eklu, Director-General of Public Affairs Department, three of the ten police officers were ordered to be interdicted immediately by the IGP.

They are; Inspector Isaac Opare of the Ministries Division/Accra, No.37698 Sgt. Ebenezer Akrofi, Accra Regional Police Headquarters and No.50852L/Cpl. Evans Kofi Nti of the Police visibility, Accra.

The IGP, has further directed that the Accra Regional Crime Officer to “take over the investigation of the case from Ministries Police Station.”
