Joseph Kwaku Obeng, the President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association has stated that, Ghana, as compared to other Sub-Saharan region charges so much on levies.

Mr Obeng while speaking on Accra based radio station Citi FM indicated that, the traders across the country travel to other neighbouring countries to purchase goods because the ones imported directly into the country are very expensive.

He said,  “We have compared the charges we pay to other Sub Saharan West African, Ghana has the highest import levy charges. This makes the cost of doing business relatively high. That is why you see most of the Ghanaian traders, going to Togo and Nigeria to do business. They are not even going to buy made in Togo or Nigerian goods; they are going to buy imported goods".

Meanwhile, the Council of State have met with President Akufo Addo to discuss the grievances of the Trade Unions.

Apparently, GUTA among others have besieged the Council of State to look into their complaints with regards to high amounts they pay as taxes when importing and exporting goods.

Mr Obeng added that, traveling to these nearby countries to buy imported goods and not goods made by those countries has a major effect on the Ghanaian currency and the country as a whole.
