Customers should blame themselves for sometimes ending up with inferior vehicle parts, spare parts dealers at Abossey Okai have said.

Abossey Okai, reputed as Accra’s most popular destination for automobile parts, is also infamous for the sale of substandard or fake parts to unsuspecting clients.

But a spare parts dealer at Abossey Okai, known as Chairman, during a special edition of Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM from the spare parts hub on Friday November 25, explained that original accessories did exist, but some buyers, in their desire to pay less, end up with parts of dubious quality, which break down after a short period of use.

According to him, some buyers did not have a realistic idea of the prices of car parts while others employed the services of middlemen in the area, popularly known as ‘Affair Boys’, who often sell them inferior car parts at lower prices or genuine parts at a mark-up.

“But cheap things kill idiots,” Chairman said

He advised customers to understand that with unstable exchange rates, increase in import duties, and a rise in the cost of automobiles, prices of spare parts could not remain unchanged.

“There are buyers who would not want to be told the truth,” he added, concluding: “So, we don’t withhold the truth – we tell the truth, but it is up to you to take or leave it.”
