The Interior Minister and Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has raised concerns about the growing influx of illegal arms and ammunition into Ghana.
According to him, many of these weapons are unregistered and untraceable.
The minister warned that the number of unlicensed firearms in civilian hands has reached alarming levels, posing a major threat to national security.
He noted that the widespread availability of these weapons has led to an increase in indiscriminate gunfire, often triggered by minor incidents.
Speaking during a meeting with security agencies as part of his working visit to the Northern Region on Wednesday, May 21, he said, "The number of arms in the hands of our citizens is getting to an alarming level. It’s giving the Peace Council, police, and other security agencies a lot of headaches. At the least provocation, you hear a gunshot. How did the people get the guns?”
The MP called for urgent national action to ensure all firearms are registered and traceable.
He also advocated for the use of technology to improve the monitoring of arms imports and sales.
“Now technology is so easy that we should be able to use technology to detect who imports and sells the guns. What can we use technology to make our country safe?
The minister explained that a combined effort from government, private partners, and security agencies is essential to curb the spread of illegal weapons and enhance national safety.
