A leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has refuted claims that he his neck deep in the dealings of troubled gold dealership firm Menzgold Ghana Limited.

Earlier claims that went viral on social media suggested that Mr Otchere-Darko is a share holder of Menzgold Ghana Limited and a close friend to the CEO of the firm, Nana Appiah Mensah.

In a tweet to deny the claims, Mr Otchere-Darko said: “I have no shares in Menzgold or any company linked to NAM1. I’ve never been a client of Menzgold and would certainly not have put a pesewa in any such scheme. Not my style. In fact, I’ve never even met the man, Nana Appiah Mensah, or had a sniff of any cash linked to him. Zero!”

The legal practitioner first commented on the Menzgold brouhaha last week after some aggrieved customers of MenzgoldGhana Limited defied Police orders to stage a demonstration in the Ashanti Region capital, Kumasi.

According to him, he has gathered that Nana Appiah Mensah popularly referred to as NAM1 "breached his bail conditions and absconded".

His claims were however denied by the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah who said the security body never made an attempt to arrest NAM 1 because they had no case against him.

Menzgold was asked to suspend its gold trading operations with the public by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

According to the SEC, Menzgold had been dealing in the purchase and deposit of gold collectibles from the public and issuing contracts with guaranteed returns with clients, without a valid license from the Commission.

This, the SEC said was in contravention of “section 109 of Act 929 with consequences under section 2016 (I) of the same Act.”
