Former Ghana International, Nii Odartey Lamptey has revealed that most players born in Europe to Ghana players are reluctant to represent the country.

He says most of them are aware of the bad treatment meted out to players of Ghanaian descent who have switched nationality to play for Ghana in the past.

According to Odartey, who played for Anderlecht in the past, he met Jeremy Doku and his parents and spoke to them at length but it was obvious his parents did not want him to represent Ghana.

The youngster just last month in the Euro Nations League made his debut for Belgium against Denmark and scored his first goal against Iceland.

“I went to Belgium and I met Doku and his parents and we had interactions. You could feel his parents didn’t want him to play for Ghana. If you look at the difficulties some players who switched nationality to Ghana …” he told Ahomka FM.

He says these players hear all the stuff that happens to players of Ghanaian descent and are therefore reluctant to switch their nationality to Ghana.

“These children monitor social media a lot so you can’t tell me he’ll let go the benefit he will enjoy from England and play for Ghana. I wish it will happen but I’m telling you point blank it will be very difficult for a player nurtured outside to play for Ghana," he said.

“It will never happen because they look at the benefit and consider what they’ll go through in Ghana and no one will choose what we go through. I may be wrong but there is no way we can convince these guys”.

In March, Black Stars coach C.K Akonnor, after an European tour, revealed a roster of seven Ghanaian disaporans who have either agreed to switch international allegiance to Ghana or are considering a possible career with the Black Stars.

France-born Strasbourg centre-back Alexander Djiku, Anderlecht's former Netherlands youth defender Derrick Luckassen, France-born Gent midfielder Elisha Owusu and Enock Kwateng of French side Bordeaux, according to Akonnor, have decided to turn up for the Black Stars.

Ghana has in recent times been linked to Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah  and Brighton's Tariq Lamptey after both have impressed for their club sides in England
