Former Black Stars winger John Nketsia Yawson has described himself as the "Western Region's greatest of all times".

The retired Yawson, who played for Sekondi Xi Wise, Hasaacas and Heart of Oak believes he’s the best player from the 1960s to date and overall best the twin city has ever produced.

Speaking on Skyy Sports Show on Thursday,  the 1979 Ghana Best Footballer of the year made a bold claim to himself, despite appreciating the performances of the other regional legends.

"I am the best player to come out of the Western part of the country from the ’60s to date, ” he said.

"There are so many players but I’m the best amongst them."

Yawson was the first African player to play in South America, he played for Sekondi Eleven Wise in 1977 and 1978 before moving to Accra Hearts of Oak for the 1978/79 season.

He also played for rival club Sekondi Hasaacas in his hey days.

In 1981, he moved to the Liga Profesional de Primera División team Club, Atlético Peñarol in Uruguay, which his first season led him to become the first African player in the Copa Libertadores. Yawson played for Penarol for two seasons.

The midfielder was a member of the Ghana squad that won the 1978 Africa Cup of Nations, as Ghana became the first ever country side to win the trophy three times.

John Nketia Yawson was part of the Ghana team that were dubbed ‘the Brazil of Africa’ due to their dominance on the African scene, while his impressive performances also saw him win the Ghana Player of the Year in 1979.

Western Region has produced notable stars such as Paha brothers, Raymond Gaisie, Edward Acquah, Kuuku Dadzie, John Eshun, Emmanuel Quarshie, Aggrey Fynn, Stephen Baidoo, Augustine Arhinful, George Blay, who are all products from the west, and have made an impact in Ghana football.
