Former Hearts of Oak coach Kim Grant has strongly called for the dismissal of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo following the team's failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ghana's disastrous campaign saw them finish bottom of Group F with no wins, including a damaging 2-1 home defeat to both Angola and Niger. This marks the first time in 21 years that the Black Stars have missed the AFCON.
Grant criticized Addo’s tactical approach, claiming that the coach lacked the experience to implement a cohesive playing system suited to the players' strengths.
He argued that Addo's decisions forced players into unsuitable roles, thereby "wasting talent" and failing to unlock the team’s full potential.
“Tactical decisions highlight a glaring lack of experience, with an inability to implement a coherent playing system that suits the players' strengths," Grant said.
"Instead, we see square pegs forced into round holes, wasting talent, and failing to maximize potential on the pitch.”
He also pointed out the double standard in the treatment of past coaches, who were dismissed for less disappointing results, suggesting that Addo and his staff have been shielded by an inner circle despite their poor performance.
Grant added, "Coaches in the past were dismissed for far less, yet this current technical staff is being shielded by an inner circle, even after this disastrous AFCON qualification campaign."
He further criticized the notion of keeping Addo on for the World Cup qualifiers, calling it "outrageous" and warning that it could lead to further embarrassment.
The Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council is expected to meet on Wednesday to discuss the Black Stars’ underperformance in the AFCON qualifiers and decide on the future of Otto Addo and his technical team.
