The likely reinstatement of the Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology appears to be generating extreme tension and fear among students who partook in last Monday’s demonstrations.

The students contend Professor Obiri Danso has a track record of rusticating students at the slightest provocation.

They insist they were relieved when government heard their cry of oppression to set aside the governing council and had hoped that a more accommodative and democratic vice chancellor would be appointed to understand their concerns.

A student who volunteered to speak to Ultimate News’ Ivan Heathcote – Fumador on condition of anonymity disclosed that students are living in fear of their fate at the hands of Professor Obiri Danso if he fully takes office as substantive Vice Chancellor.

“There is a state of turmoil among students. The fate of 40 thousand students hang in a balance and right now we are in a state of confusion especially when we heard of the reinstatement of  the not so long ago dissolved council of the university.

“Professor Obiri Danso is one person that we can tag with the Rustication Papa. He is very fond of that. I must state on record that he likes rusticating students and I believe that should he regain power, he will resort to that,” the visibly bewildered student noted.

Meanwhile the Head of the modern languages department and vice chair of the KNUST University Teachers Association Professor Charles Marfo points out that the university has laid down measures for meting out punishments to errant students.

He wants students to be assured of the university’s disciplinary measures which he describes as robust.

He indicated that, “If they are caught on tape destroying property or engaging in any bad activities, the university has its own rules and regulations we go through. It could be summary dismissal, rustication, suspension and normally you will go through a disciplinary process; basically like the law court. They should be assured that they are in competent hands and a law abiding institution.”

Meanwhile, the university has put the cost of items and property damaged at the university at a cost of 1.6 million cedis.
