Komenda Sugar Factory to resume operations by end of 2026 – Trade Ministry
18th December 2025
The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has announced plans to bring the Komenda Sugar Factory back into operation by the end of 2026.
According to the Ministry, land has already been acquired for sugarcane cultivation, which will provide the raw materials needed for the factory’s production.
Established in 1964, the Komenda Sugar Factory has faced numerous challenges over the years, including technical difficulties that led to its prolonged shutdown. The facility has remained dormant since its closure.
In August 2025, the Ministry inaugurated an Interim Management Committee tasked with assessing the factory’s assets, evaluating its financial and business viability, and reviewing the sugarcane supply chain.
Speaking during a working visit by Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, said preparations are well underway to ensure the factory becomes operational within the stated timeframe.
She also called on investors to support sugarcane farmers with financial assistance and necessary inputs to maintain production.
“We have acquired land for the plantation of sugarcane in the Komenda area. Sugarcane farming is part of the local heritage; the farmers are ready, willing, and happy. We hope to operationalise the Komenda Sugar Factory by the end of 2026,” she said.
