The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffuor Awuah, has met key stakeholders including officials of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), the Trades Union Congress (TUC); Union of Commerce, Industry and Finance Workers (UNICOF); and the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU), to discuss issues affecting workers of the newly-created state-owned Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited (CBG).

A statement signed by Mr Awuah, said: “A meeting convened on Monday, 10 September 2018, under the authority of the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations in respect of the revocation of licences of the five defunct banks: uniBank Ghana Limited, Sovereign Bank Limited, The Construction Bank, The Royal Bank and The Beige Bank (In receivership). The key stakeholders present were the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana; Nii Amanor Dodoo, the Receiver (without liability), the Managing Director of Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited (CBG); Secretary General of TUC and his deputy; General Secretary of UNICOF, National Chairman of UNICOF, and General Secretary of ICU.

“The focus of the meeting was to discuss staff related issues affecting workers of the five defunct banks.”

It added: “The following key points were established; The five defunct banks were insolvent and the Government of Ghana, acting through the Ministry of Finance, created the Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited (CBG) to assume some of the assets and liabilities of these defunct banks; The CBG, as part of its integration and rationalisation, would maintain a sizable number of workers of the defunct banks; that there should be further engagement between the Receiver and the unions to collectively address the issues to be tabled for discussions; Government assures the general public that it will continue to monitor outcomes of the engagement between the Receiver and the unions to ensure amicable resolutions of the issues affecting the workers.”

The Bank of Ghana recently merged these five banks into and created the Consolidated Bank Ghana.
