Former Ghanaian international, Laryea Kingston has called on the Ghana Football Association to begin considering issuing out longer-term contract to national team coaches to get the best from them.

According to the former Hearts of Oak and Heart of Midlothian star, newly appointed black stars Coach CK Akunnor could have been offered a three to five years contract in order to get the best out of him.

Akonnor, a former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of trainer succeeded Kwasi Appiah at the helm of the Black Stars and is expected to guide Ghana to a fifth AFCON title triumph next year in Cameroun.

He has been tasked to  secure qualification to the 2022 world cup in Qatar.

Despite the targets set by the Ghana FA, the Black Stars coach, like many of his predecessors, has only been given a two deal.

And Speaking to Starr FM in Accra, Laryea Kingston explained that it takes time for a coach to build and hence Akonnor should have been given a lengthier contract.

“They should give coaches some time’’, the former Black Stars winger said.

‘‘Sometimes when you are building a team, at least you will need like 3 to 5 years. that’s when the players will understand your philosophy, what you are bring on board and other things.

“The first two, three months for you being with the players. You will do a lot of talking but after that they will understand your daily periodization. when you are periodizing your training programme weekly, monthly and yearly, they will understand what you want to bring  on board.

“So for me I think three years would have been good for him and then we monitor how he is faring and within that time we will see the sort of legacy he will bring on board within that period  for the players and the whole country” Kingston concluded.
