Cape Verde delivered a shock upset to Ghana with a stoppage-time winner in their Group B clash at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Garry Rodrigues capitalized on a defensive mix-up in the 92nd minute, tapping into an empty net to secure a dramatic victory for the Blue Sharks.

Earlier in the match, Jamiro Monteiro had given Cape Verde the lead in the 17th minute, capitalizing on a rebound after Ghana's keeper, Richard Ofori, had parried away Jovane Cabral's shot.

Ghana thought they had equalized before halftime, but Majeed Ashimeru's stunning long-range strike was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Alexander Djiku did manage to level the score in the 56th minute with a stooping header from Jordan Ayew's corner.

However, Ofori made crucial saves before Rodrigues' late heroics secured Cape Verde's victory.

There was a moment of history for Andre Ayew, introduced to captain the Black Stars in the 62nd minute, who became the third man to appear at eight Afcon finals - matching the record held by former Cameroon defender Rigobert Song and ex-Egypt midfielder Ahmed Hassan.

The result sees Cape Verde go two points clear at the top of Group B, while Ghana faces a challenging task against Egypt in their next match on  Thursday (20:00 GMT) before Cape Verde take on Mozambique the following day.
