Prosecutors in Algeria on Thursday said ex-football star Rabah Madjer should be jailed for 18 months, during his ongoing trial for fraud.

Madjer, 63, who famously scored for Portuguese side Porto in the 1987 European Cup final with an audacious back-heel and went on to coach Algeria's national football team, is on trial for multiple charges.

As well as fraud, he is also charged with forgery and making a false statement, according to media reports.

Madjer, who owned two newspapers, is accused of continuing to bank revenues from public advertising for a year after the papers were closed.

Algeria's national publishing and advertising agency (ANEP) has demanded the return of fees as well as the payment of damages.

A verdict is expected on June 9.
