Dr Eric Oduro-Osae, Dean of Graduate Studies of the Institute of Local Government Studies, has called on opposition parties to review their constitutions to allow their members to serve in government to help prosecute the national agenda.

According to him, Ghana will see rapid development if a government is able to recruit the best available human resources, regardless of political affiliation, to serve in government.

His comment comes on the heels of the appointment of the former flag bearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Dr Edward Nasigre Mahama, as Ambassador-at-large by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Dr Oduro-Osae believes the appointment of Dr Mahama who contested Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2016 election signifies a growth in Ghana’s democracy.

Speaking on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM on Tuesday 11 July, 2017, he told sit-in host Kwesi Parker-Wilson: “I think it is the beginning of ensuring that the President makes good use of the available human resources to him in this country. It also tells us that our democracy is growing.

“From John Kufuor’s regime when he appointed Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom up until this time, it seems to me politicians and various governments are beginning to appreciate the fact that they have other skills and other qualified people outside their party that can be used to prosecute the agenda of their government and when this happens it means government and parties have started orienting and thinking as national institutions, they are thinking that they are prosecuting a national agenda which requires the collective effort of all Ghanaians.

“I believe it is the beginning of good things to happen. What is left for us to do is to get the various political parties to review or amend their constitution to make it flexible to allow their members to serve in a political party that wins elections so that in the way up to the elections, you can be with your party. But as soon as a party wins elections and forms a government, you put all hands on deck. We use all the available human resources to prosecute the national agenda to ensure that there is development.”
