Liberian president George Oppong Weah has declared the University of Liberia and all other public universities in Liberia as tuition-free for all undergraduates.

The former footballer announced this in a Facebook post on Wednesday, 24 October 2018.

He wrote: "Today, I'm excited to announce that I have declared the University of Liberia and all other Public Universities in Liberia tuition free for all undergraduates".

Prior to entering politics, Weah was a professional footballer who played as a striker.

His 18-year professional career ended in 2003.

He became involved in politics in Liberia following his retirement from football.

Mr Weah formed the Congress for Democratic Change and ran unsuccessfully for president in the 2005 election, losing to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in the second round of voting.

In the 2011 election, he ran unsuccessfully for Vice-President alongside Winston Tubman.

Weah was subsequently elected to the Liberian Senate for Montserrado County in the 2014 elections.

He was elected president of Liberia in the 2017 election, defeating the incumbent Vice-President Joseph Boakai and sworn in on 22 January 2018.
