The Liberian government is currently investigating circumstances which led to the disappearance of some $60m (£45.6m) from the state coffers.

The BBC reports that two huge consignments of money that were printed abroad and brought into the country between November last year and August this year have gone missing.

Reports from certain quarters claim that containers containing money and headed for the central bank vanished without any trace.

This is alleged to have happened in August last year despite the container being guarded by security personnel from the port in the capital, Monrovia.

Meanwhile, the consignment that came through the international airport cannot be accounted for either.

Security officers in the country have taken up the matter and have commenced investigations to expose the perpetrators.

Liberia’s Minister of Information Eugene Nagbe said President George Weah was not informed about the development until now.

According to him, Weah, who took office in January, is “unhappy” that he is now getting to know about an issue as serious as this.

Currently, no arrests have been made but the Justice Ministry has urged calm among the public as the Police continue to investigate.
