The lifeless body of six-year-old Sylvester Owusu, affectionately known as Sly, was discovered on Monday morning in the River Offin at Denkyira Buabinso.
The young boy had gone missing on Saturday afternoon after falling into a flooded gutter while returning home from his grandmother's food stall at the Zongo Market.
According to reports, Sly slipped and fell into the gutter, which had overflowed due to heavy rains. He was swept away by the raging water through the Anikoko River and eventually ended up in the River Offin.
An extensive search effort was launched by the community and emergency responders, but it wasn't until Monday morning that his lifeless body was found.
The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Dunkwa Government Hospital, processed and released the body to the family, and Sly was later buried at the Dunkwa Mfuom Cemetery.
Local Assembly member Hon. Yaw Ayensu expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a devastating loss for the family and community.
This tragic incident has sparked renewed calls for improved drainage systems and safer walkways in flood-prone communities, particularly to protect children from the dangers posed by open gutters and poor infrastructure during the rainy season.
The community is still reeling from the loss of young Sly, and his family is mourning the tragic death of their beloved child.
