Former President John Dramani Mahama has raised concerns about complaints from some aspirants that the process of choosing the party’s flagbearer is unfair.

This is according to the Spokesperson of the Mahama Campaign, James Agyenim Boateng.

On Tuesday, the former President held a closed-door meeting with minority Members of Parliament in a move which has been described as part of the aspirant’s engagement with stakeholders.

This was after majority of the MPs had supported to raise money for Mr. Mahama’s nomination and filing fees, whiles other aspirants complained about the cost.

Speaking to Citi News, James Agyenim Boateng indicated that the former president would further engage all stakeholders in the party.

“I think Mr. Mahama has concerns too, he has a concern that, it appears that some people think that this is an election by collection or a group of people. The important thing is that, Mr. Mahama is focused on delivering his message and getting people to buy into his message,” he said.

Member of Parliament for the Cape Coast South Constituency, Kweku Ricketts Hagan, suspended his campaign as flagbearer hopeful of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Describing the decision as difficult, he said he had to back off the race because delegates have heavily endorsed the candidature of one particular aspirant, hence it was baseless to continue with his campaign.

Last August, Kweku Ricketts-Hagan declared his intention to contest as a flagbearer of the party saying he was ready to share his message based on the party’s principles to enable it to have a realistic chance of reclaiming political power in 2020.

Mahama the frontrunner?

Coming off the national delegates’ conference, the support for John Mahama was overwhelming from NDC supporters.

Even before he had declared his intent, the 10 Regional Chairmen of the NDC had backed the candidature of Mr. Mahama for election 2020.

Ninety-four NDC MPs out of the Minority Caucus of 106 also endorsed Mr. Mahama as the flagbearer for the 2020 polls prior to his announcement.

The list of the MPs backing him was made public after he made his intention to contest public.
