Mali showcased their intentions in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Cote d’Ivoire 2023, by securing a comfortable 2-0 victory over South Africa in Tuesday's Group E encounter.

In an initially competitive match, Sekou Koita and Lassine Sinayoko found the net to secure Mali's win in Korhogo.

The game began with both teams exchanging attacks, with Mali's Sinayoko denied a goal on four minutes by Ronwen Williams' reflex save.

South Africa's Percy Tau had a chance to take the lead in the 19th minute but missed a penalty awarded by VAR.

Mali intensified their efforts in the second half, with Amadou Haidara hitting the bar before Hamari Traore scored the opening goal in the 60th minute.

Sinayoko added to the lead five minutes later with a low shot through Williams' legs.

Despite South Africa's late attempts to rally, including a free-kick from Themba Zwane that hit the woodwork, Mali maintained control and secured the victory.

With this win, Mali tops Group E on goal difference, joined by Namibia, which surprised Tunisia with a 1-0 victory earlier on Tuesday.

Mali's impressive performance, featuring players like Yves Bissouma, Amadou Haidara, and Koita, suggests they have the potential for a successful campaign in Cote d’Ivoire.
