In a thrilling encounter, Mali secured their spot in the quarterfinals of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d'Ivoire 2023 with a 2-1 victory over Burkina Faso on Tuesday in Korhogo.

The Eagles took an early lead in the 3rd minute when an own goal by Edmond Tabsoba, who unfortunately redirected a powerful Amadou Haidara header into his own net.

Despite creating numerous chances, Mali couldn't extend their lead in the first half.

However, in the second half, Lassine Sinayoko capitalized on a defensive lapse to score and give Mali a 2-0 lead just after the restart.

Burkina Faso fought back, and their efforts were rewarded with a penalty in the 57th minute, converted by captain Bertrand Traore.

Despite Burkina Faso's late surge and pressure, Mali's resolute defense held firm, securing their place in the quarterfinals.

Mali will face tournament hosts Cote d'Ivoire in the next round on Saturday, February 3, in Bouake.
