Vice President Dr Mahamud Bawumia's quest to lead the New Patriotic Party received a major blow with chocking defeats from his candidates at the regional level.

In what has been described as a pilot election of the upcoming Alan versus Bawumia contest, results from Friday's contest compounded the woes of the vice president.

Candidates presented from the camp of Dr Mahamud Bawumia lost massively in 5 of the 6 regions that conducted their elections on Friday.

Candidates tabled by the Vice President lost in Bono East, Western North, Ahafo, Savannah and Upper East Region with only Northern Region falling for the self-acclaimed Economic messiah.

With the remaining 10 regions set to conduct their regional elections on Saturday and Sunday, it appears the fortunes of the Veep might be over before the two powerhouses head to the ballot.

Elected candidates at the regional level will join the grass root polling station executives to elect the new flag bearer for NPP in the post Nana Addo era.

The Presidential showdown is expected to be fought between Hon Alan Kyerematen and HE Dr Mahamud Bawumia with Kennedy Ohene Adjapong reportedly joining the race at the tail end.
