The Graphic-Zoomlion Clean Ghana campaign received massive support at Hohoe in the Volta Region last Saturday when residents came out in their numbers to participate in a clean up exercise.

The residents joined the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the municipal assembly to clean up the market and lorry station.

The mostly men and women traders cleared the areas of rubbish, and desilted the choked gutters.

The exercise also attracted personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Fire Service, assembly members, and staff of the municipal environmental and health unit.

As part of the programme, Zoomlion distributed 100 waste bins to some individuals and organisation to encourage proper sanitation practices.

The clean-up exercise is part of an ongoing clean Ghana campaign by GCGL and Zoomlion being implemented across the country to encourage behavioural change among the public towards maintaining a more hygienic environment to make the country clean.

The campaign followed a regional stakeholders dialogue on sanitation, which offered the platform for key stakeholders to discuss ways of dealing with the sanitation issues and to put the country on the path to achieve the goal of becoming a clean country.

Commitment

The Director, Marketing and Sales of GCGL, Mr Franklin Sowa, said in an interview that stakeholders in the Volta Region had shown commitment to improve on their sanitation situation as evidenced in the clean environments around the communities, making it one of the cleanest regions in the country.

Mr Sowa noted that the clean environments of the region would attract more tourists to the area, and urged the people to maintain proper sanitation habits.

"If we live a much healthier life, our productivity improves, and there is opportunity for tourism growth," he said.

He expressed optimism that the collaboration between GCGL and Zoomlion would yield the needed results, taking into consideration the level of commitment and involvement of stakeholders in the entire campaign.

Engagement

The Volta Regional Manager of Zoomlion, Mr Solomon Denyo, said the company was engaging institutions and working with the assemblies to ensure that the company’s programme to distribute one million bins to homes and institutions became a success.

He said the company had an elaborate plan to sort out metal, plastics and other solid wastes for recycling purposes.

The Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Ted Ofori, commended the team for organising the clean-up exercise, stating that it had complemented the monthly clean-up exercise organised by the assembly.

He promised that the assembly would put in more efforts to enforce its bye-laws to step up the fight against poor sanitation.

The District Manager of Zoomlion, Mr Owusu Delali, said the company would soon extend its operations to Fodome, Alavanyo, Santrokofi, Likpe and Lolobi.
