Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye, is expected to be sworn in as acting President of Ghana, on Sunday January 21, 2018.

Parliament has been recalled for the short ceremony, which will see the Speaker sworn in as Acting President of Ghana.

The urgent move has been necessitated by the absence of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamud Bawumia.

President Akufo- Addo who will be out of Ghana will be in Liberia to attend the investiture of George Oppon Weah on Monday while his vice, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has also travelled to the United Kingdom for his medical leave on the advice of his doctors.

A statement from parliament said: “In exercise of the power conferred on the Speaker by Order 42(3) of the Standing Orders of the parliament of Ghana, I, Honourable Joseph Osei-Owusu, First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, pursuant to Order 13(2), do hereby summon parliament to sit on Sunday, 21 January 2018 at half past two O’clock in the afternoon at parliament house, Accra, for the swearing in of the Right Honourable Speaker as Acting President of the Republic in accordance with Article 60(11) and (12) of the 1992 Constitution.”

Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, is expected to administer the swearing in ceremony in Parliament.
