The Minority in Parliament has cautioned the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) to buck up or face a vote of no confidence.

The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, believes Ghanaians are gradually losing faith in the EC and has therefore called on Madam Jean Mensa to up her game.

He pointed to the EC’s data Centre, registration of new persons who turn 18 and the implementation of ROPAA as things that are currently not being handled very well.

The Peoples Representation Amendment Act known as ROPAA is the law passed to allow Ghanaian citizens living abroad to vote in general elections.

Making his contribution to a statement on the implementation of ROPAA, Haruna Iddrisu  said the Minority will be forced to initiate a vote of no confidence against the EC Chair if she does not improve her work.

“The Electoral Commissioner must up her game or else we will call for her head… My faith in the Electoral Commission is waning,” he said.

“Mr. Speaker, they don’t have any challenges. That is why I am saying that she must up her game. The date system of the Electoral Commission cannot even conduct district assembly elections.”

“We should even have an Electoral Commission which makes it mandatory that on daily basis, Ghanaians can walk to them, when they attain 18, to register for the purpose of voting,” the Minority Leader added.

Madam Jean Mensa was officially sworn in as the new Chairperson of the EC in 2018 by President Akufo-Addo.

However, the EC boss has since been faced with criticism from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a press conference after her appointment, the NDC’s General Secretary described her as bias and therefore not fit for the position.
