Motorists in Ghana will be required to present their Ghana Card when purchasing or renewing any motor insurance policy from January 1, 2026, the National Insurance Commission (NIC) has announced.

In a statement signed by the Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Dr Abiba Zakariah, the Commission said the directive is part of efforts to strengthen regulation and improve transparency within the insurance industry.

Under the new policy, individuals seeking motor insurance must present their Ghana Card at the point of sale, while corporate clients will also be required to provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN) for all motor insurance transactions.

The NIC noted that the measure is expected to enhance the processing of insurance claims, strengthen Know-Your-Customer and Anti-Money Laundering compliance, curb fraud, and align Ghana’s insurance sector with international best practices.

The Commission has therefore urged motorists to take note of the new requirement and ensure they have their Ghana Card available when visiting motor insurance outlets from the effective date.
