Veteran Ghanaian football administrator Nana Fitz Gerald Bakers Wood has hit hard on local-based sides who engage the services of foreign coaches outside their financial comfort.

According to the former Kumasi Cornerstone chairman, employing foreign coaches without possessing the requisite  financial capacity to match the employment is a detriment on the team's progress.

He insisted that it is a very "weak experience" the Ghana league is going through because employing foreign coaches who make such exorbitant salary charges results in unpaid salaries to one party or another.

"You always have to cut your coat according to the material in hand but they (the clubs) do not listen when they are advised. Whether you want a foreign coach or local coach, you must be sure if you can you afford to pay?  he asked

"Some think that engaging the services of foreign coaches automatically makes them a good team. It is a very weak experience we are going through because when you bring in these foreign coaches you pay them heavily and this makes the team unable to pay either the playing body and even if the players are paid the coach cannot be paid."

According to the stalwart football administrator, the meagre income some of these clubs make through gate fees at the various stadia are channelled into paying for the services of these coaches which is not the best.

He challenged listeners of Ashh FM's "Super Sports" show to mention two or three clubs in Ghana who have won the league with foreign coaches in charge.

"Give me two or three examples of clubs here in Ghana who have brought in foreign coaches to win the league title since 1960 when some of us started following football." he challenged.

He regretted the practice of going for loans just to bring in foreign coaches insisting that he has never been a huge fan of foreign coaches.

He was however quick to emphasise that employing foreign coaches was not a completely bad practice but a team must be up to the task before taking the step.

He made a case for local coaches in Ghana arguing that this practice breaks the spirits of the local coaches.

"Continuously bringing in these foreign coaches kills the confidence of some of our local coaches. They are also human beings" he lamented.

He claimed some of the local coaches are employed without signing any contract which leaves them vulnerable to unexpected dismissals.

ON AVRAM GRANT

The controversial football patron took time off his assertions to hit out at current Black Stars coach Avram Grant describing the Israeli's ways as "foolish"

"Let us go the Black Stars team. When Kwesi Appiah was appointed coach of the national team was he given the sort of treatment these white coaches are given?. But immediately a white coach comes he is given a hotel room and given special treatment. If Avram Grant was a local coach he would not have had the opportunity to put up his foolish ways. In fact he would have been sacked by now. The guy takes about $50,000 a month and that is about 2 billion old Ghana cedis but what at all is he doing? he stated.

Avram Grant came under intense pressure from some Ghanaian football fans when the Black Stars drew with Uganda at the Tamale Sports Stadium and South Africa in a World Cup qualifier and friendly match respectively and subsequently  failed to show up in Gabon for the 2017 AFCON draw.
