The National Democratic Congress is expected to stage a massive demonstration on Friday June 29 2018 against the sacking of the Electoral Chairperson Madam Charlotte Osei and her two deputies, Mr Amadu Sulley and Ms Georgina Opoku Amankwah.

The demonstration has been necessitated by the largest opposition party when President Akufo Addo on June 28 fired the EC chairperson and her deputies on the grounds of misbehaviour and incompetence.

The Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akufo had set up a committee to investigate the matter brought up by Ghanaian citizens calling for the removal of the three heads of the EC in pursuant to Article 146(4) of the Constitution.

The Ghanaian citizens who had called for the removal of the heads of the EC were aggrieved workers at the Commission and had complained saying, following her appointment as EC Chair, Mrs. Osei “compromised the independence and neutrality of the Commission by arranging for 2015 V8 Land Cruiser with registration WR 2291-15 from the office of the President for use as official vehicle without going through the procurement process or recourse to the Commission.”

However, the largest opposition, the NDC in a press conference on Thursday June 28 at around 11:00 pm had stated that the President had sacked the Madam Charlotte Osei and her two deputies to enable the ruling party New Patriotic Party (NPP) continue with their rigging machinery.

Speaking at the Press Conference, the National Organizer of the NDC, Kofi Adams had stated,“Tomorrow, the anger of the people will be shown on the streets. As I said earlier, they have bastardized every institution that we have in this country, indeed President Akufo Addo, Vice President Bawumia and his people have a termite mentality. Termites destroy and think that they’re building, what they’ve done is to destroy what we’ve built over the years but we’ll not sit down and allow them to continue the distraction.

“They have destroyed various ministries, the Civil servants have complained, CLOGSAG has issued letters, threats, they’ve done nothing about it. We’ll not allow them to extend their destruction to institutions like the Electoral Commission. This is an institution that we will religiously guard and protect.

“We call on civil society, religious leadership of this country, Chiefs, Queen mothers  not to sleep on this matter. We should all rise and say enough is enough. They’ve done enough destruction and we’ll not allow them to continue with this destruction.”  He added.

The demonstration is expected to begin at Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle at 7:00 am and a large crowd is expected to join.
