Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have intercepted a 43 large bags of cannabis sativa smuggled into the country from Ghana, Nigerian Authorities have reported.

The drugs, which reports  say worth N250million , were    imported into the country through the creeks on Saturday, along Badagry axis of Lagos, in a  fully loaded  boat.

The Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the Command, Umar Yusuf, says the  prohibited items were busted by the country's Western Marine Command (WMC),upon tip off, while the suspects escaped through the creeks.

“This seizure of this cannabis makes the forth in the last six months. This time around the seizure was made at Agbara/Badagry axis by our patrol team after we got a security alert that the unscrupulous elements were about entering our country with the items from Ghana,"he said.

"Immediately, we swung into action and intercepted the boat fully loaded with the items, but the suspects jumped into the water to evade arrest., adding that ”Thereafter, the patrol team waited for a while to see if they will swim up but to no avail."

“Our officers have done tremendously   well   in improving the seizure profile of Western Marine, which recorded seizures valued at N3.3 billion in 2016. This is against a total of 13 seizures estimated at N6.5 million, and the Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N8 million, the same period in 2015.”

"We will continue to fight smuggling activities as long as smugglers refuse to turn away from this illegal business,” he pledged.

Ghana has taken steps to address the issues at its borders as it seeks to strengthen  security agency to better coordinate their efforts in fighting border crime.

However this fresh case of smuggling paints a gloomy picture  of the security and its ability to combat crime.

Experts say more needs to be done as the country is considered by many as an  easy place to smuggle banned substances.
