The Greater Accra Regional Police says claims of a curfew in Accra are false. This follows the shutting down of shops across the capital in the evening of June 25.

This false curfew alert saw many residents of the capital vacate work and other activities following the circulation of the said report.

This report had warned residents to remain indoors by 7 pm Monday over a traditional rite expected to be observed in the Ga Mashie enclave.

The director of operations for the Accra Regional Police Command, Chief Superintendent Kwesi Ofori said no traditional council has the power to impose curfew hence the rumours should be disregarded.

Also, the head of public affairs of the AMA Gilbert Nii Ankrah also corroborated the assertion of the police.

“The other time there were some confusion so I suspect people are spreading this because of what happened the other time,” he revealed in an interview with Starr FM.

Homowo Festival is celebrated by the Ga people of the greater Accra region of Ghana. The moral of the festival is to commemorate the period in their history when there was a serious famine in the land. The festival is very glamorous and showcases a lot of traditional values of the GA people.

Legend has s that there was a period in the history of the GA Kingdom when there was a severe famine. There was no rain and the people were in great starvation. They, therefore, celebrate the Homowo to hoot at hunger and rejoice in their harvest.
