Norway sets a global benchmark with 89% of new cars sold in 2024 being fully electric, inching closer to its 2025 goal of eliminating petrol and diesel vehicles.

 Norway's Electric Revolution

Norway is on the brink of making history as the first country in the world to phase out petrol and diesel vehicles. According to recent data from the Norwegian Road Federation, nearly nine out of ten cars sold in 2024 were fully electric, signaling a monumental shift in the nation’s automotive landscape.

Electric Cars Dominate Norway’s Streets

The latest statistics reveal that 88.9% of all new cars sold in Norway last year were electric, a significant jump from 82.4% in 2023. Brands like Tesla, Volkswagen, and Toyota led the charge, solidifying Norway's position as a global leader in electric vehicle (EV) adoption.

"Norway will be the first country in the world to eliminate diesel and gasoline cars from the new car market," said Christina Bu, head of the Norwegian EV Association.

Policies That Power the Transition

Norway’s success in transitioning to electric cars is rooted in its progressive policies. Although the country is a producer of diesel and petrol, it has implemented high taxes on fossil fuel vehicles while abolishing import duties on EVs to make them more affordable.

“This policy has worked because it has been continuous,” noted experts, emphasizing the importance of consistency in driving sustainable change.

Additionally, Norway’s unique position as a non-car-producing nation has made it easier to enforce such measures.
"Because we don't make cars, we have a lot easier to impose taxes," explained Ulf Tore Hekneby, head of Harald A. Moeller, Norway's largest car importing company.

A Global Leader in Green Transition

Norway's aggressive push toward electric vehicles aligns with its broader environmental goals. With its sights set on exclusively electric car sales by 2025, the nation is inspiring other countries to follow suit. The European Union, for example, has committed to banning the sale of carbon-emitting vehicles by 2035, though Norway is already years ahead in this green transition.

 Driving Toward a Sustainable Future

As Norway approaches its 2025 target, it is clear that the nation is not only leading the global shift toward sustainable transport but also setting a precedent for how policy and innovation can drive meaningful change. With nearly 90% of its new car sales now electric, Norway’s streets are a testament to a greener, cleaner future for transportation.
