Former President Jerry John Rawlings has commended the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), for what he describes as the party’s “consistency” in holding onto it values.

He believes the NPP, unlike the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been very consistent in living by their principles.

Mr. Rawlings believes that this quality contributed to the NPP’s victory in the 2016 general polls.

“The NPP are not so vulnerable. Whether you pump money into them, you try to corrupt them or not, there is a certain consistency by virtue of who and what they are and that figure, in terms of election could invariably always be the same. You and I do not have the consistency of the NPP . We have a different type of consistency but we appear unable to hold on to that consistency,” Mr. Rawlings told teeming NDC supporters at the party’s 25th anniversary rally held at Ashaiman in the Greater Accra region.

Proffering suggestions for the party’s victory in the next election, Mr. Rawlings indicated that, the opposition NDC could wrest power from the NPP in the next polls if it identifies its strengths and deals with its weaknesses.

“…We have some potential strong and powerful that we could virtually win every election all the time if we recognized our strengths and dealt with our weaknesses and because of that certain powers have been vested in certain personalities to do business and to do politics in this country in order to take away from you in the NDC so that they will be a better balance.”

The former President also reminded the NDC to combine unity with sincerity and integrity, saying “…Unity is a beautiful sound, and I would like to hear that. But unity comes at a price; and it is not asking for plenty of money. It is only asking for integrity, truthfulness and sincerity. We must come clean. Let’s come clean. That’s the only way some of us know how to live,” Mr. Rawlings added.

Other dignitaries who graced the occasion were former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s General Secretary; Johnson Asiedu Nketia , and the NDC’s National Chairman, Kofi Portuphy among others.

This is not the first time the former President has called for integrity in the party.

He recently made a similar call during the 38th June 4th revolution anniversary, where he stated that, Ghanaians voted out the NDC because of sickening greed, selfishness and corruption.

According to Mr. Rawlings, such practices are contrary to the values upheld by the NDC, describing them as a “betrayal of the values of June 4,” which are probity, transparency and accountability.

“Nobody is saying don’t make money, make it good and clean; but not some of the ones I know; sickening, that kind of greed and selfishness, look at where it landed us. Or is it because this government is not behaving the way Kufuor did in his time, so we think we are okay? I know what’s going on. I know some of the things they are running into,” he said.
