Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has defended the party’s decision to hold its presidential primaries early, saying it will give the chosen candidate enough time to connect with key groups and raise the party’s profile at home and abroad.

This comes after the NPP officially announced January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries, a move linked to the party’s ongoing efforts to review its constitution and improve its election strategies.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV on Tuesday, June 17, Haruna Mohammed said the early date will help the party's flagbearer begin policy discussions early and build stronger ties with both the business and international communities.
“It is going to market the candidate enough, particularly in terms of building contacts with the international community, the business community, and stakeholders across the globe,” he noted. “We will have sufficient time to communicate our policies effectively and hold the government accountable," he said.

He added that the extended time will also allow the party to clearly explain its policies and offer a strong opposition voice ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Mr. Mohammed also pointed to the NPP’s current position in Parliament, holding only 88 seats as a reason to focus on strong leadership and external engagement.
“We need someone who can rise above internal distractions and rally support nationally and beyond to keep the government in check,” he said.
