The Majority in Parliament has executed an unexpected walkout during the voting process for the 2024 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the Akufo-Addo government.

The move has left several Ghanaians baffled and stunned at the development.

This comes after a heated debate during the processes leading to the approval of the policy document.

After the two leaders of the House wrapped up the various submissions of their sides, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin called for a voice vote.

The Speaker in his ruling indicated that “I think the ayes have it.”

This commentary generated huge brouhaha leading to an objection by the Minority front bench.

A Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah in challenging the ruling by the Speaker and calling for a headcount.

That move by the NDC MPs led to tempers flaring up in the chamber, as the Majority frontbench tried severally to ‘force’ the Speaker’s hand to have the vote stand.

As tensions flared and dissenting voices grew louder, Members of the Majority made an unexpected exit from the parliamentary session, creating a dramatic scene.

Their exit led to a huge chorus of ‘bye-bye’ from the NDC MPs.
