NPP Primaries: Police clear all voting centres except Bawku - IGP confirms
23rd January 2026
The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has announced that the Ghana Police Service has completed security assessments at all voting centres for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer elections—except in Bawku, where heightened security concerns persist.
Speaking at the peace pact signing ceremony by the five NPP presidential aspirants, the IGP disclosed that additional military support would be required to secure the Bawku enclave.
“The Police Service has formally written to the Minister for the Interior to liaise with the Minister of Defence to ensure military assistance during the exercise in Bawku,” he stated.
He assured the public that, aside from Bawku, the police are fully prepared to provide comprehensive security across all other voting centres to guarantee a peaceful and orderly election.
The ceremony also featured remarks from Justin Kodua Frimpong, who urged aspirants to place party unity above personal ambition, stressing that even the eventual flagbearer would require the collective support of party members to secure victory in the 2028 general elections.
All five aspirants signed the peace pact as part of efforts to prevent internal tensions and promote cohesion within the party ahead of the NPP primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.
