The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a strong ultimatum to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) within the Greater Accra Region, warning of legal action if unauthorised billboards placed on road medians are not removed by Monday, June 2, 2025.

The warning follows a failed stakeholder engagement, as many targeted assemblies failed to attend a scheduled compliance meeting with the Authority.

NRSA Director-General, Abraham Amaliba, expressed disappointment during a media briefing, accusing the absentee assemblies of deliberate defiance.

“We invited all of them through the Local Government Ministry. They misunderstood and assumed the invitation was extended to all assemblies nationwide, which is why some came from outside Accra."

“Those within Accra, who were required to attend, failed to show up. We are treating their absence as deliberate noncompliance, and we will proceed to sue the assemblies that have ignored our directive," he said.

According to Mr. Amaliba, the NRSA had initially issued a 21-day deadline for the removal of the billboards and had intended to use the meeting to offer a possible extension.

However, the lack of cooperation has prompted the Authority to move forward with legal proceedings.

“This means they are not interested in complying. So, what we are going to do is meet them in court,” he added.

The NRSA emphasised that the removal of the billboards is a matter of public safety, warning that the unauthorised structures pose significant risks to road users and obstruct visibility along key routes in the capital.
