Olympiakos are poised to become the first Greek club to clinch a European trophy as they face Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final in Athens on Wednesday.

Jose Luis Mendilibar's team reached their maiden European final by defeating Aston Villa 6-2 on aggregate in the semifinals.

The Greek champions now stand against Fiorentina, who are determined to overcome the heartbreak of last season's final loss to West Ham.

"It would be amazing. We'd go down in Olympiakos and Greek football history," said Mendilibar.

The Spaniard, who led Sevilla to Europa League triumph last season, took charge of Olympiakos in February after they were relegated to the third-tier Conference League following their exit from the Europa League group stages.

Olympiakos' journey to the final saw them beat Ferencvaros, recover from a 4-1 home loss to Maccabi Tel Aviv in the last 16, and overcome Fenerbahce in the quarterfinals, setting up their decisive clash with Villa.

"Along the way, we've crossed the whole of Europe, playing against a lot of opponents," Mendilibar remarked. "There are so many different moments and I think we could call it a marathon, and now we've reached the end."

Fiorentina, on the other hand, are unbeaten in European competitions this season. The Italian side, which also lost last year's Coppa Italia final, aims to honor their late general manager Joe Barone, who passed away in March.

Fiorentina's captain, Cristiano Biraghi, acknowledged the challenge of facing Olympiakos in their home city but emphasized their commitment to victory.

"Between the first and second legs, they scored six goals against Aston Villa who finished fourth in the Premier League," said Biraghi.

"We made a promise to Joe, now we hope to be able to honor it. What I can say is that we will put everything we have on the field to make that happen."

The final, set in the iconic city of Athens, promises to be a thrilling contest as Olympiakos and Fiorentina vie for European glory.
