OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says his children will grow up more skilled thanks to AI tools like ChatGPT but admits they will never be "smarter than AI". Altman also highlights AI’s potential risks and benefits for future generations.
OpenAI Boss Sam Altman Says AI Will Outpace Human Intelligence — Including His Own Children
The CEO and co-founder of OpenAI, Sam Altman, has made headlines with his striking remarks about the future of artificial intelligence and its inevitable dominance over human intellect — even that of his own children.
Speaking during the first episode of the OpenAI Podcast, Altman reflected on the profound role AI will play in shaping the lives of future generations, including his own newborn son. The tech executive, who announced the birth of his child on February 22, believes tools like ChatGPT will profoundly enhance the skills of young people — yet their intellectual capabilities will still fall short of AI itself.
‘They’ll Never Be Smarter Than AI,’ Says Altman
“My kids will never be smarter than AI,” Altman stated candidly during the podcast. Despite this, he expressed optimism that AI would serve as a powerful ally in helping the next generation develop skills and capabilities that surpass what was possible for previous generations.
“They're going to grow up much more skilled than us, capable of doing things we can't imagine, and they're going to be really good at using AI,” he added.
Altman stressed that he focuses more on what AI will contribute to future generations than what it may take away. “I don't think my children will ever be bothered by the fact that they are not smarter than AI,” he explained.
AI's Benefits — But Also Its Challenges
While Altman expressed enthusiasm for AI’s potential to uplift society, he acknowledged that rapid advancements in the technology bring complex social challenges.
“There will be problems,” Altman admitted, citing concerns such as the rise of “problematic or perhaps very problematic parasocial relationships” between humans and AI-driven systems. He called for new social protections to manage the evolving dynamic between humans and increasingly powerful AI tools.
Nonetheless, Altman remains optimistic that the benefits will ultimately outweigh the downsides. “The positive sides will be extraordinary,” he concluded.
ChatGPT — A Tool for Parenting
Altman, who described himself as being “extremely obsessed with children,” revealed that AI already plays a central role in his approach to parenthood. He shared that in the early weeks of his son’s life, he frequently turned to ChatGPT for advice on providing basic care.
His remarks underscore the growing presence of AI not only in business and technology but also in the intimate routines of family life.
As AI continues to evolve at breakneck speed, Altman’s comments reflect both the hope and uncertainty that surround its role in shaping the future of human development.
