A final year student of the University of Ghana, Reginald Sekyi-Brown, has been granted bail after he was detained by the Police on Wednesday for appearing before the first lady of Ghana, Rebecca Akufo-Addo with a placard as she was delivering a speech.

Mr. Sekyi-Brown who was protesting the failure of government to open the University of Ghana Medical Centre which was completed under the Mahama led administration is expected to report back to the police on Friday to help in investigations.

The hospital has remained closed after being commissioned by former President, John Mahama in January 2017 three days before he handed over power to the newly elected president.

According to sources, Mr Brown started the campaign #OpenUGMCNow campaign on social media which has drawn a lot of students to join his cause.

He was arrested after he walked straight and stood beside the first lady who was addressing an audience at the Korle Bu hospital after she had gone to cut sod for the construction of the paediatric ICU Wednesday with a placard with the inscription “OPEN UGMC NOW”.

However, he was approached by a police officer to move away from the first lady because he stood right beside her to show her the placard but he resisted and was then forced to move from the scene.

Controversy over who has the right to manage the multi-million dollar edifice has left the facility closed for more than a year since it was constructed.

The 650-bed facility is the first of its kind in West Africa and second to only few hospitals in South Africa. The ultra-modern hospital was conceptualized and began under the Late President John Evans Atta-Mills.

The Government secured a loan facility from Harpo Alim Bank of Israel for the project.
