Operations restarted at Newmont Mining Corp’s two gold mines in Ghana on Monday, a company spokesman said, after they were shut down on Saturday following an accident in which six construction workers were killed.

The company temporarily shut down all its mining operations after tragedy hit its Ahafo mine on Saturday.

Six workers on contract died following the collapse of the reclaim tunnel roof at the company's  Ahafo Mill Expansion project on Saturday.

The six deceased workers were among 10 men working on a reclaim tunnel on the Ahafo Mill Expansion project.

They were subcontractors working with Consar Limited, a construction services company.

Consar has been contracted to construct a reclaim tunnel roof at the Ahafo Mill Expansion Project,

Kwadwo Asare, Gideon Amankwaa, Kojo Bismarch, Ben Brako, Agyei Wale and Ebenezer Sarfo all workers of Consar Company Limited, died on April 7 in the accident.

Four other persons, Musa Sulemana, Seth Kwame, Daniel Dzitor and one other person sustained injuries but were treated and discharged on the same day at a clinic, according to joyonline reports.

Civil works on the mill expansion project at Newmont’s Ahafo project, where the accident occurred, remain suspended, the spokesman has  said.

Government has announced it will put its team together to investigate what really happened.
