Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, has called on the government to ensure that the recently approved $360 million World Bank facility is used strictly for its intended purposes.
Speaking during parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, July 1, Oppong Nkrumah emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the disbursement and utilization of the funds, which are intended to support the 2025 national budget.
“Contributing to the debate, I urged our colleagues from the other side to ensure transparency for its utilisation and not deviate from what the cabinet approved the funds for,” the MP wrote on his Facebook page following the session.
The $360 million financing agreement—a partnership between the Government of Ghana and the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA)—was presented to Parliament by Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem.
The funding forms part of the Second Resilient Recovery Development Policy Financing initiative and is expected to:
-
Improve citizens’ standard of living
-
Boost economic growth
-
Maintain macroeconomic stability
-
Help curb inflation
-
Support broader economic recovery efforts
While the Finance Committee recommended the approval of the facility, the Minority raised concerns and voiced opposition during parliamentary debates.
Oppong Nkrumah’s remarks reflect growing calls for government to uphold transparency and fiscal discipline in managing international financial support, particularly in the current economic climate.
