Former Ghana player and coach Otto Addo has been named as the new coach of the senior national team.

Otto Addo has signed a 34-month contract that is for 2 years, 10 months with an option for a further 24-months as the new Black Stars coach.

This follows the recommendation of a five-member committee tasked to find a new manager for the team, which the Ghana Football Association says it has accepted.

Addo will join Ghana this international break, after which he will return to Borussia Dortmund to finalise handing over in his role as talent coach, then begin work for the Black Stars in May.

The Black Stars have been without a permanent coach since the dismissal of Chris Hughton and his technical staff following a disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where the team failed to progress beyond the group stages, finishing third in Group B behind Cape Verde and Egypt.

Addo, who previously served as the interim coach of the Black Stars in 2022, has garnered favor with the selection committee due to his experience and track record.

Under his guidance, Ghana secured qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a victory over Nigeria in the playoffs, although the team did not advance beyond the group stage in Qatar.

However, his reputation for developing talent and fostering a positive team culture could prove invaluable in helping the Black Stars realize their full potential.

The decision to hire a new coach is part of a broader effort by the GFA to revamp the national team program and restore its status as a force to be reckoned with in international football.
