Antoine Semenyo has offered an insight into his early conversations with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, revealing that the Spaniard encouraged him to stay true to his natural attacking instincts.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Ghana forward said Guardiola’s first message was simple but powerful, play with freedom and confidence.

“The first thing he said to me was, ‘Just continue playing your game. Play free, express yourself, shoot, dribble, do whatever feels right for you,’” Semenyo explained.

The 25-year-old, known for his direct running and willingness to take on defenders, admitted the reassurance meant a great deal, especially in a City side famed for control, structure and intricate passing.

Guardiola, Semenyo said, made it clear that joining a possession-based team did not mean sacrificing individuality.

“He doesn’t want me to take away from my game because it’s a passing team and we keep the ball,” Semenyo added. “There are going to be moments in the game where I can express myself.”

That freedom, he believes, has helped him settle quickly and perform with confidence in a squad filled with world-class talent.

Semenyo’s comments highlight Guardiola’s man-management approach, balancing tactical discipline with individual expression, a combination that has been central to City’s success in recent seasons.

For the Ghana international, the message from his manager has been both liberating and motivating, as he looks to continue making an impact at the highest level while staying true to the qualities that brought him to the former Premier League champions.
