Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Youth and Culture Alex Agyekum has issued a clarion call to the players of the various national teams to help in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Government has established a COVID-19 fund in order to help alleviate the hardship that the pandemic is having on the citizenry.

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, current captain Andre Ayew, Kasim Adams, Samuel Owusu,Kingsley Fobi and Kwadwo Asamoah among others have made personal contributions some financially and others distributing items to help fight the pandemic.

But the legislator has called for the the various national teams to collectively give back to the country that has given them so much.

“The players must donate to the Covid-19 fund introduced by the government," Agyekum told Peace FM.

"We know some of them have done their best but I think the national team must rise to the occasion.

“We are waiting for them, maybe they are preparing themselves for the better. They should try and come on board.

"Captains of the various national teams must mobilise them because this is the time to show the government some love.

“The foreign-based players should try and do something because this is the time we need them.”

Ghana has recorded 641 cases of the coronavirus with 8 persons dead while 83 have fully recovered while the Greater Accra Region,Greater Kumasi and Kasoa have all been put under partial lock down.

The pandemic has affected more than 2 million people with over 154,000 dead while over 500,000 have fully recovered.
