Three young men are in the custody of the Ghana Police Service in the Ahafo Region after being arrested for the unlawful possession of firearms and for allegedly plotting to carry out a robbery.

The suspects—Johnson Mawutor, 26; Kelvin Ofori, 22; and Mawuli Dogba—were picked up in separate but related operations on Saturday, February 22, 2026.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, the Ahafo Regional Police Commander, DCOP James Annor, said intelligence gathered by the command suggested the suspects were preparing to engage in a robbery but were intercepted during a late-night patrol along the Ayomso–Goaso road.

Late-night patrol thwarts suspects

According to DCOP Annor, a Regional Taskforce patrol team was on routine duty around 11:30 p.m. when officers spotted Mawutor and Ofori riding an unregistered motorbike toward Ayomso, near Goaso, the regional capital.

He said the two allegedly became suspicious on noticing the police patrol, switched off the motorbike’s headlights, and attempted to flee. A chase ensued, leading to their arrest.

A search conducted on the suspects uncovered an AK-47 assault rifle, serial number 68098152, loaded with 29 rounds of ammunition. The weapon was concealed in a bag they were carrying.

Third suspect arrested; cache of weapons found

Further investigations led officers to Abrodanho, a suburb of Goaso, where a search at Mawutor’s residence resulted in the arrest of the third suspect, Mawuli Dogba.

Police retrieved a Beretta Bruni pistol (serial number MOD.92), an NM157-1941 pistol, 30 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and 50 rounds of AK-47 ammunition from the room. Other items seized included four Motorola mobile phones, a Contixo F35 drone, a machete, and a bayonet knife.

DCOP Annor said preliminary investigations indicate that Mawutor, Dogba, and another suspect identified as Mohammed-Adinan Ussif—who is currently on the run—allegedly acquired the weapons earlier that same day in Techiman.

Manhunt underway

The Regional Commander said efforts are ongoing to arrest the suspect at large and to identify any other accomplices connected to the case. He assured residents of the Ahafo Region of the police’s continued commitment to maintaining peace and security.

DCOP Annor also appealed to the public to support police operations by volunteering credible information that could aid ongoing crime-fighting efforts.
